Team Poe

I would be a member of Team Poe because of the way Poe writes his poems and stories. I like how Poe's writings use a lot more description. The use of the diverse vocabulary is also a reason that I like his writings better than Irving's. The final reason i like poe is the feelings that reading a poe story can bring.

The Tide Rises, The Tide Falls

"The Tide Rises, the Tide Falls" is a great romantic poem that has a great message. I feel this poem can have a big impact on a lot of people's lives. The message of this poem is that the world will continue on with little change even after someone dies. This poem is a reality check for the people who feel that the world won't function without them and they are incredibly important. Overall, I feel this poem is very important and has a great message.

The Wind

The wind is an intergal part of my life. While the wind brings about a lot of good it can also end in some very bad things. It cools me off when I'm on the golf course during the hot summer days. It changes my approach to my day of golf. It brings the clouds and rain from far distances to soften the hard ground and water the dry plants and grass. The wind also causes me to freeze during the cold winter days. It also can cause damage to the area and bring about some long hard hours of work to clean it up. All in all, the wind is an important part of my life and I would not be able to function for long with out it.

McCarthy Hearings

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_uTbVfDtgI&feature=related
The above video is a documentary about all the different aspects of the McCarthary hearings and everything that went into making the hearings so wide spread in the culture of the United States. I found it very interesting that this occured right around the time when televisions became more commmon so the average household could watch the hearings on tv. While I don't agree with how McCarthary went about dealing with the problem of communists in the government, I believe it had to be done somehow and didn't need to include people from Hollywood. Overall, this video was very interesting and taught me a lot I didn't already know about the hearings.

The Stupidity of the Salem Witch Trials

The Salem Witch Trials were nothing more than a catch-22 for the people involved in it. If someone didn't name another person or admit that they practiced witchcraft they were punished for practicing witchcraft, but if they just confessed when they actually weren't practicing witchcraft they were allowed to live. The fact of innocent until proven guilty would of been a great thing to have for the people that were being punished even though they weren't guilty because it could have saved their lives. Also the fact that the girls were just naming names to not get in trouble for the dances that they were doing in the woods was a little ridiculous because they could name anyone they didn't like and they would be put on trial as a witch.

Weather
It sprinkles
It pours
It mists
It hails
The power of God prevails
Its light
Its dark
It cools
It warms
God's creation performs

Squanto

Squanto was a Native American who had learned English from fishers that had landed on the coast earlier. He was a key part in keeping the peace between the Native Americans. He had served as a translator between the Wampanoag tribe and the pilgrims. He also taught the pilgrams ways to survive like planting crops and scavaging for food. I believe that without Squanto or another Native American who spoke English and was willing to help the pilgrims the colony would of failed by either a limited ammount of supplies or by being wiped out by the Native Americans. While towards the end of Squanto's life both sides began to distrust him, all of the life-saving actions squanto did for the pilgirms will never be forgotten.

La Relacion Journal

This picture is of the healings that Cabeza de Vaca was forced to preform while staying in the Native American village. This picture while it does seem to be very gruesome and painful to the person being healed seems to be very accurate. Cabeza de Vaca is currently cutting the wound open so that he can suck the poison, cauterize it, and blow on it so that he can heal the person. The person in the back holding the cross could be inaccurate, but there was no dismention of the cross in the journal so there could of been someone doing so.

Here is an interesting video of a Native American dance and chant. This video shows that even after all the oppression of native americans and kicking them our of their lands their culture and chants have still survived. While I do not understand what they are saying I can tell that they take everything very serious and any adult can take part in the rituals.
